We are looking for an environmental professional to join our team that regulates industrial installations in Lincolnshire. As a regulatory officer you will be at the forefront of protecting people and the environment from harm and helping contribute to a cleaner, greener world.

You will undertake compliance assessment activities at a wide range of industrial sites such as landfill, biowaste, incineration, food & drink or hazardous waste. While some experience is preferable, we will also develop your regulatory skills in a particular industrial specialism. You will ensure permit compliance and make complex assessments of an operators' ability to protect the environment, prevent pollution and optimise use of resources. At times you will set conditions under which a site may continue to operate and enforce the law should they fail to comply. You will also respond to and investigate incidents making sure preventive and protective action is implemented.

You will use your influencing and negotiating skills to secure best practice, often dealing with people at senior levels within industry, local communities and other interested groups.

Everyone that joins us is required to undertake training and participate in incident response duties when the need to respond arises, having an incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and is an active way to support communities and prevent harm to the environment. The Team:

We regulate a wide range of industrial sectors including landfill, chemicals, hazardous waste, incineration, combustion, biowaste treatment and food & drink. We work with the Health & Safety Executive as the joint Competent Authority regulating sites under the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations. While you are developing specialism in particular work areas, you will work closely with team members and national colleagues to tackle a diverse range of environmental challenges we face.     


Experience/Skills Required:

You will have some regulatory or industrial experience/ knowledge in any of the sectors mentioned above and can demonstrate operational or regulatory knowledge of waste or and industry in general.

Essential:

You will be a proactive, self-motivated and confident communicator, used to influencing and negotiating to deliver outcomes, with strong interpersonal skills, together with some technical expertise or regulatory experience within an industrial or waste environment.

 You will preferably:

  • Be familiar with environmental management systems, auditing, and root cause analysis
  • Be able to interpret environmental monitoring and performance data.
  • Be used to managing multiple demands and delivering outcomes independently
  • Take initiative and practice a continuous improvement approach.
  • Have a degree or equivalent in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline, and possibly be a member of a relevant professional organisation.

Following training, you will take up an incident management role which may include out of hours standby duties.

The posts can be based in either our office in Kettering or Peterborough, Lincolnshire. The need to attend these locations will be flexible, combined with site visits and home working.

These are permanent posts and a full UK driving licence will be required as is flexibility to travel for operational site visits.
