What is an industry placement at the Environment Agency?

Are you ready to collaborate and embrace the variety of opportunities an industry placement with the Environment Agency brings?

If you are, so are we! We’ll invest in you and allow you to grow and shape your career.

Our industry placements last up to one-year and are an opportunity to work on a specific project(s) in a team or even on a rotation across teams.

Further information about each of our opportunities can be found below.

Industry placements

Our 12-month paid industry placements usually start in the late Summer/early Autumn.

Depending on the opportunities we have available, roles will be split into appropriate subject and/or location categories.

Previously, we have recruited for industry placements in:

  • Environment and science
  • Business and communications
  • Process and chemical engineering
  • Civil and Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation (MEICA) engineering

Eligibility criteria

Our industry placements are currently open to undergraduates in their second year of study and recent (within the last year) graduates who have a right to work in the UK.

Eligibility criteria is reviewed before the upcoming recruitment campaign, and, therefore, may be subject to change.

What to Expect from the Application Process

While the exact process may vary slightly, it typically includes:

  1. Online Application - A tailored form that gives you the chance to highlight your skills, motivations, and suitability for the scheme.
  2. Behaviour-Based Assessment (BBA) - Delivered by Arctic Shores, this assessment measures your natural, work-relevant behaviours through interactive tasks rather than traditional questions.
  3. Shortlisting - Applications are reviewed to ensure they meet the educational requirements and are assessed based on the strength and relevance of your responses.
  4. Interview - If shortlisted, you will be invited to a single virtual interview.

About the Behaviour-Based Assessment (BBA)

Unlike traditional assessments, the BBA does not ask you to describe how you would behave – it lets you show it. Through a series of engaging, game-like tasks based on neuroscience, the assessment captures how you naturally respond to challenges and situations.

It looks at traits such as:

  • How you plan and manage your workload
  • How you complete tasks and track progress
  • How you adapt and build relationships with others

These behaviours reflect the qualities we value most at the Environment Agency.

The assessment provides a fairer, more objective way to understand your potential, especially useful for early career roles where CVs may not fully reflect your strengths.
