Protecting People, Nature and Our Climate Future
At the Environment Agency, we’re dedicated to keeping people safe and protecting the things that matter to us all – our natural spaces, our wildlife and our future.
We do this by being a delivery organisation. We’re a Category 1 responder, a regulator and a partner – working creatively and inclusively to lead and respond to change.
Climate change is the biggest challenge we face. We inspire the people we work with to help the country not only survive, but to thrive through the challenges of a changing climate.
Our ambition is to create a net zero nation, resilient to climate change. We’re working to help the country become better prepared for its impacts while taking action to prevent further climate change.
Our society and the environment are ever changing – as are the challenges all of us face. We need a diverse workforce to help us deliver better for the diverse communities and environment we serve.
When you’re with the Environment Agency, you’re part of a people-led culture that supports you to build a career and legacy that matters.

Our Climate Ambition
The Environment Agency’s long-term goals for England are:
- Healthy air, land and water supporting nature’s recovery.
- Sustainable growth.
- A nation resilient to climate change.
With 6 guiding principles for how we’ll fulfil our responsibilities over the next 5 years, against our long-term goals, our ambition is set out in.

Our organisation
The Environment Agency was established in 1996 to protect and improve the environment. We have over 12,000 employees. Our head office is in Bristol and we have another office in London. We have offices across England, divided into 14 areas listed below. See a map of our areas.
The Environment Agency is made up of different teams, working together across different regions with one shared mission – to create a better place.

Our Departments
Working closely with our colleagues in the wider Defra Group we draw on expert professional advice in areas like finance, HR, IT and communications.
Incident Management
From on-the-scene response to office-based administration, there are a variety of incident management roles. You could be outside dealing with a pollution event, in the office supporting colleagues to manage flood response, or advising emergency services dealing with a waste fire. Or you could be working from home to support business continuity and ensure urgent work gets done while your colleagues respond to incidents.
Wherever you’re based, you’ll have the opportunity to think differently and work flexibly, while developing a range of new skills. And you’ll make a vital contribution to protecting life and keeping communities safe.
We are a place-based organisation
with office locations all over England.

We have 14 geographical areas delivering our work programmes on the ground for local areas, Our National teams support our local teams to deliver by setting policy, ways of working and strategic direction for our organisation.
We have opportunities all over the country and the opportunity to work flexibly and remotely from different offices and from home as the role allows.
The location and flexible working options for each role are available within each job advert.
