Job description

Are you passionate about the environment and want to help protect it for your own and future generations?

Are you looking for that first step into an administration role? Or maybe you’re looking for a change of career?

This is an incredible opportunity to work towards and gain a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship. This means you will be working in permanent employment, gaining experience and working towards your qualification at the same time.

You will play an important role in our national Permitting service, helping us to protect people and the environment and enable green growth. As the business  administrator for Integrated Permitting Services (IPS), you will be responsible for providing administrative support to our IPS Leadership Team.  You will also work collaboratively with the four business administrators from other permitting regimes (e.g. Water Resources, Waste, Installations) to provide administrative support across the wider Permitting business.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship you will have the skills, knowledge and behaviours to undertake the responsibilities below:

• Manage our business data including data storage, people management information and delivery against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

  • Filter and direct incoming queries, identifying urgent and/or sensitive matters and dealing with them appropriately.
  • Undertake general administrative duties and tasks as assigned by your manager e.g. to support recruitment.
  • Arrange meetings, book venues and sort out travel and hotel bookings.

We work at home and in the office, and support flexible working hours to help you balance your work and personal life. This role is  based in our Sheffield office, and we would expect you to work from there at least 20% of the time.

The Team:
Within Permitting, you will be part of Integrated Permitting Services, a team of 130 permitting officers and advisors who determine environmental permits needed for activities that could pollute the air, water or land, or increase flood risk. You will be working in our IPS administration team, based in Sheffield. This team has a strong customer focus and is essential in providing a range of administrative services that support the permit and licence application process.
Experience/Skills Required:

No previous experience is required as the apprenticeship will provide you with the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours to be fully effective in the role. Whilst some relevant work experience would be an advantage, it is more important to us that you can demonstrate the key transferrable skills and personal qualities that we’re looking for:

  • Able to work using basic computer applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ensure data and information is handled correctly and accurately
  • Ability to work independently on your own, managing your own workload and escalating any issues as needed
  • Work confidently as part of a team to meet team and personal performance targets

As an organisation we strive to reflect the communities we serve and continue to develop diversity throughout our workforce. We welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of race, sexual orientation, or religion.

Contact and Additional Information:

Interviews are scheduled to take place in early May and will be carried out remotely using Microsoft Teams.

For any queries about the role please contact Emily Michalski at [email protected].

Please note that apprenticeship training is based on a minimum of 30 working hours per week. This is a Level 3 apprenticeship and will typically take between 12 and 18 months to complete.

Everyone that joins us is required to undertake training and participate in incident response duties when the need to respond arises, having an incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and is an active way to support communities and prevent harm to the environment. Further information on incident response can be found within your candidate pack.
