What you’ll be doing:
- Predominantly be working outdoors installing, operating and maintaining water flow and level measuring equipment in our local rivers and groundwater monitoring boreholes.
- Processing, quality assure and archive the data that you’ve collected, helping to ensure the health of our water systems.
- Building relationships based on the customers’ needs and provide the service required.
- Play a key role in resolving issues or repairing equipment, ensuring that the Environment Agency is best prepared to respond during environmental incidents; helping to protect people and livelihoods from the impacts of flooding.
- Expected to drive to site locations across the Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside completed scheduled and reactive visits.
- There will also be an element of lone working within this role.
There is also the flexibility to work from the office and home but we are a place-based organisation. We are committed to offering a flexible approach and having choice in where we work, to meet business needs within a framework.
This is an entry level role, and we’ll provide you with full on the job training led by our experienced team members as well as formal training provided by external training suppliers. You will be fully comfortable and competent in the role before being asked to complete any site visits on your own.
What we’re looking for:
- A positive can-do attitude and a passion for learning and protecting the environment.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills as you will be working as part of a team and will have contact with the public.
- Confidence with using IT systems, in particular Microsoft Office programmes
- Logical and analytical approach to problem solving.
- Numerate
Due to the nature of the role the below criteria are essential:
- Full UK driving licence
- Must be able to swim as you will often be working in/near water.
- You will be required to pass colour vision tests prior to appointment as you will have to maintain electrical equipment with multi coloured wiring.
As the Environment Agency is a Category 1 Responder, responding to serious flood and pollution incidents. You will be expected to have an incident role. We’ll help you to identify a role that fits your skills, experience and personal circumstances.
Everyone starting in a new role in the Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire area will be welcomed into the team and given all of the training and support they need to succeed.

We expect Environment Agency employees to be present in a shared workplace for activities which are better done together. However, even though we use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, some travel and overnight stays may be required
