The future of water is under pressure – together we can protect it.
We protect people and the natural environment by managing water, our most precious resource. We work to make sure there is enough clean, safe water for us all, now and in the future.
We do this by:
- regulating water quality and preventing pollution.
- controlling water abstraction and long-term water supply planning.
- overseeing the water industry and enforcing environmental compliance.
- managing drought.
- protecting aquatic habitats and species.
Become part of our community of water professionals and play a vital role in securing a sustainable water future.

Explore our teams
-
Hydrology
We analyse the movement of water through our environment, providing data analysis, modelling and forecasting, to help manage the impacts of climate change and safeguard water resources and quality.
-
Hydrometry & Telemetry
We measure, monitor and record environmental water data, including river flow, rainfall and groundwater. We are responsible for the telemetry systems that provide data for water management.
-
Permitting
We manage water resources and protect water quality through environmental licences and permits which set out the responsibilities and limitations on the use of water.
-
Environmental Planning
We plan actions needed to maintain a healthy water environment. We gather and analyse information on environmental pressures, apply regulatory requirements, and work closely with internal teams and external partners such as water companies.
-
Water Resources Planning
We work with water companies to assess water resource management plans to address possible problems in water availability at a local, regional and national level.
-
Hydrogeology
We study the distribution, flow and quality of water underground and ensure groundwater is properly assessed and available for beneficial uses without damaging the environment.
-
Water Quality & Policy
We protect and improve water quality by influencing, regulating and supporting businesses, industry and water companies to meet environmental standards.
-
Hydroecology
We bring together an understanding of water systems and aquatic ecosystems to help balance human water use with environmental protection. We provide hydroecological evidence and influence positive environmental change.

Career entry opportunities
Water Resources Graduate Scheme
-
The Water Resources Graduate Scheme is a four year programme designed to launch a rewarding career in water resources, where you can shape how water is protected, managed and sustained for generations to come.
This is more than a job, it’s a career with endless possibilities, offering the chance to explore different pathways, develop specialist expertise, and make a real impact on people, nature and the environment.
-
Through rotational placements across local area teams and national teams, you’ll experience a wide range of water resources disciplines. These rotations allow you to explore different roles, challenges and projects, helping you discover where your interests and strengths lie while building a broad, resilient skill set. You’ll gain insight into how water resources work at local, regional and national levels, preparing you for a long term career in this increasingly important field.
-
Alongside your Water Resources role, 20% of your time is dedicated to personal and professional development, where you’ll explore training and development opportunities and work towards chartership with a professional body, such as the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
-
Apply for the Water Resources Graduate roles through the Environment and Science Graduate Training Scheme, which is advertised annually from December to January.
Meet the career entrants helping to shape the future of Water…
In addition to our Graduate Training roles in Water, we also offer Industry Placements and Summer Internships.
