Major Investigation Room
The National Environmental Crime Unit provides leadership across The Environment Agency Enforcement Community. Alongside our partner organisations we look to tackle crime, environmental offending and reduce the impact on people, the environment and legitimate businesses.
We use intelligence and data to inform decision making and use our resources to focus on the most serious and organised criminality. We are home to the Joint Unit for Waste Crime (JUWC) and The Major Investigation Room (MIR) and have Investigation and Disclosure Teams. Our accredited Financial Investigators lead on Financial Investigations removing assets made illegally.
We enable outcomes by providing specialist expertise across the enforcement community whilst ensuring that our people have the skills to deliver their enforcement role. We also manage the issuing of Rod Licences and the enforcement of rod and line offences, have a specialist Illegal Waste Exports Team and lead on the production and analysis of data to set Environment Agency priorities.
Climate change is the biggest risk we face and is worsened by those who choose to act outside of Environmental Laws and Legislation. Within National Enforcement we investigate and prosecute the very worst of environmental offending across the country, and sometimes far beyond. By bringing successful prosecutions against those committing and benefitting from environmental crime, we hope to ensure offenders are bought to justice and any financial gain redirected into improving our natural environment, making it a better place for people and wildlife.
