HYDROLOGISTS

Hydrology in the Environment Agency is applied to flood risk, abstraction management, the security of public water supply, assessing environmental needs and managing droughts. The roles we are looking to recruit are in our water resources department which covers all of the above except flood risk. Water resource hydrologists sit in one of 14 Area teams or our national team. The Area teams know their local river catchments and work closely with other local teams who collect the data, ensure abstraction compliance or coordinate environmental planning. The national team helps develop tools or guidance for the Area teams as well as working with national datasets and other national strategic teams.
Climate change impact
Climate change affects rainfall, catchment response and user demand which together impact water availability. Our hydrologists analyse the various components of the hydrological regime that help us to quantify both current water availability and what it is likely to be in future.
Hydrological impacts need to be assessed and dealt with in combination with ecological, social and economic factors. For example the demand for new houses, economic growth and the predicted impacts of climate change will increase pressure on scarce water resources. Hydrological understanding needs to be applied to these and other challenges to help find and implement solutions. We need hydrologists who are not only comfortable working with numbers but can also connect with these other disciplines to understand the implications of climate change on future water regulation.
